Many of Jesus' own mathētai (disciples, a broader group than the Twelve) describe the teaching as sklēros (hard/harsh/offensive), questioning who can akouein (hear/accept) it, indicating both intellectual difficulty and moral offense.

Language and setting

The adjective sklēros means not merely difficult to understand but offensive and demanding, suggesting the resistance is as much volitional as intellectual. This signals the coming mass defection.

Jesus' wider circle of disciples speak among themselves, expressing their struggle with the teaching they have just heard.

Significance

Even those who had been following Jesus find this teaching too much. The word hard does not mean confusing; it means offensive and demanding. A crisis of faith is forming among His own followers.
