The scholarly reading

Jesus initiates the test by asking Philip 'Where can we buy bread?' (pothen agorasōmen artous). Philip is singled out perhaps because he was from nearby Bethsaida (1:44; 12:21) and would know the local resources.

Language and setting

Jesus' question to Philip parallels God's testing of Israel in the wilderness (Exodus 16:4). The verb dokimazō ('to test') in the next verse confirms that Jesus already knows the answer; this is a test of faith, not a request for logistical advice.
