The scholarly reading

Jesus corrects two errors: first, it was not Moses (ou Mōusēs) but the Father who gave the manna; second, the 'true bread from heaven' (ton arton ek tou ouranou ton alēthinon) is not manna but what the Father gives now (present tense didōsin). The shift from past to present changes everything.

Language and setting

The adjective alēthinos ('true/genuine') distinguishes the reality from the type. Manna was a foreshadowing; the true bread from heaven is Christ Himself. The present tense 'gives' makes this a current, available reality.

Significance
