The scholarly reading

Jesus reduces the plural 'works' to a single 'work' (ergon): to believe (pisteuēte) in the one God has sent. This is revolutionary: the entire human obligation before God is distilled into faith in Jesus. Yet even this 'work' is more gift than achievement.

Language and setting

By calling faith the 'work of God' (to ergon tou theou), Jesus may mean either 'the work God requires' or 'the work God Himself produces.' The ambiguity is likely intentional: faith is both commanded and enabled by God.

Jesus answers the crowd with radical simplicity: the one 'work' God requires is faith in His Son.

Significance

The crowd expects a list; Jesus gives them one thing. All of God's requirements for humanity are condensed into a single response: believe in the one He sent. This is the most liberating and challenging answer anyone has ever given.
