The scholarly reading

Jesus commands them to stop working (ergazesthe) for perishable food (tēn brōsin tēn apollumenēn) and instead work for food that 'endures to eternal life' (tēn brōsin tēn menousan eis zōēn aiōnion). This food the Son of Man will give (dōsei), and the Father has 'sealed' (esphragisen) Him for this purpose.

Language and setting

God's 'seal' (sphragis) on Jesus likely refers to His baptismal anointing with the Spirit, His miracles, or the Father's ongoing authentication. The sealing guarantees that Jesus is the authorized distributor of eternal sustenance.
