The scholarly reading

A large crowd (ochlos polus) follows Jesus because they 'saw' (etheōroun, imperfect, 'kept seeing') the signs (sēmeia) He performed on the sick. Their pursuit is motivated by the spectacular rather than by faith in Jesus' person.

Language and setting

The crowd's sign-following echoes 2:23-25, where many believed because of signs but Jesus did not entrust Himself to them. John consistently distinguishes between sign-based fascination and genuine faith.

Significance
