The scholarly reading

Jesus disclaims the role of accuser (katēgorēsō) before the Father, stating that their accuser is Moses himself, in whom they have 'put their hope' (ēlpikate, perfect tense indicating ongoing hope). This is deeply ironic: their champion becomes their prosecutor.

Language and setting

The authorities prided themselves on being Moses' disciples (9:28). Jesus turns their confidence in Moses against them: Moses, properly understood, testifies to Christ. To claim Moses while rejecting Jesus is to misunderstand Moses entirely.

Jesus delivers a startling reversal: He will not accuse them before the Father because Moses, their own hero, already does.

Significance

In a devastating twist, Jesus tells them He will not need to accuse them on judgment day. Moses himself, the one they claim to follow, will be their prosecutor. The very law they cherish will testify against them.

43I have come in My Father’s name, and you have not received Me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will receive him.

44How can you believe if you accept glory from one another, yet do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?

45Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, in whom you have put your hope.
