John 5:35, in plain English

Jesus describes John as a lamp that burned and gave light, and says the people were happy to enjoy his light for a while. But a lamp is not the sun.

Where it sits in the story

They loved John's preaching. They gathered around his flame. But when John pointed to Jesus and said, 'He is the one,' they stopped listening. They enjoyed the lamp but refused to look at the sun.

The scholarly reading

John is described as 'a lamp that burned and gave light' (ho luchnos ho kaiomenos kai phainōn). The term luchnos ('lamp') is deliberately chosen: John was not the light (phōs, 1:8) but a derived lamp. Their enjoyment was temporary (pros hōran, 'for a season').

Language and setting

The lamp/light distinction recalls the Prologue (1:6-8) where John is explicitly distinguished from the true Light. Their willingness to 'bask' (agalliasthēnai, 'rejoice') in John's light was genuine but insufficient if it did not lead them to the true Light.

Voice

Jesus acknowledges John's genuine prophetic role while distinguishing him from the greater Light that John pointed toward.

Significance

Jesus honors John as a burning lamp while gently noting that the authorities enjoyed his light only temporarily. They were willing to bask in John's reflected glow but unwilling to follow where his light was pointing: to Jesus Himself.
