John 5:29, in plain English

Who's speaking

Jesus describes the ultimate outcome for all of humanity: two resurrections with two very different destinations.

Where it sits in the story

There are only two paths, and everyone will walk one of them. The life you live now is revealing which resurrection you are heading toward. That is why believing in Jesus and living accordingly matters so much.

The scholarly reading

The universal resurrection leads to a dual outcome: 'resurrection of life' (anastasin zōēs) for those who have 'done good' (ta agatha poiēsantes) and 'resurrection of judgment' (anastasin kriseōs) for those who have 'done evil' (ta phaula praxantes). This echoes Daniel 12:2.

Language and setting

The mention of 'doing good' and 'doing evil' does not contradict salvation by faith (v.24) but describes the visible fruit that faith or unbelief produces. Good works are the evidence, not the basis, of the life that faith has already granted.

Voice

Jesus describes the two possible outcomes of the future resurrection, distinguishing between those whose lives reflected faith and those whose lives reflected rejection.

Significance

The final resurrection has two destinations: life for those whose actions reflected genuine faith, and judgment for those whose lives were marked by rejection of God. The divide that begins now in how people respond to Jesus will be made permanent on that day.

27And He has given Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man.

28Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming when all who are in their graves will hear His voice

29and come out—those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
