Another 'Truly, truly' introduces a promise of immense scope: hearing Jesus' word and believing the Father yields eternal life (zōēn aiōnion) as a present possession (echei, present tense). The believer 'has crossed over' (metabebēken, perfect tense) from death to life, a completed transition.

Language and setting

The realized eschatology here is striking: eternal life and the avoidance of judgment are not merely future promises but present realities for the believer. The perfect tense metabebēken indicates a past action with continuing results.
