Language and setting

The flesh/Spirit contrast in John is not the Pauline flesh vs. spirit ethical dualism but an ontological distinction between the natural human realm and the divine realm of the Spirit.

The principle is absolute: natural processes produce natural results. Only the Spirit can produce spiritual life. Human effort, however sincere, cannot generate the new birth.
