Breakfast on the Shore
When they had finished eating, Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love Me more than these?” John 21:15 · Berean Standard Bible
After breakfast, Jesus turns to Peter and asks him point-blank: do you love Me more than anything else? Peter says yes, and Jesus responds with a calling: feed My lambs.
Remember, Peter denied Jesus three times. Now Jesus gives him three chances to say 'I love You.' It's not a test. It's a restoration.
Jesus speaks directly and personally to Peter, using his given name Simon, making this deeply intimate.
This conversation by the fire is one of the most tender moments in Scripture. Jesus doesn't bring up the failure. He simply asks for love and gives Peter a purpose.
Jesus asks Peter if he loves Him using agapao, but Peter responds with phileo. Jesus then commissions him to 'feed My lambs,' beginning the threefold restoration.
The threefold question mirrors Peter's threefold denial (18:17, 25, 27). The phrase 'more than these' may refer to the other disciples or the fishing enterprise. The shift between agapao and phileo has been debated, though the terms may be synonymous in Johannine usage.
Jesus initiates the conversation with Peter using his formal name 'Simon son of John,' signaling the gravity of the exchange.
By the same type of charcoal fire where Peter denied Jesus three times, Jesus now gives him three opportunities to affirm his love. Each affirmation is met with a pastoral commission, restoring Peter to his calling.
