Mary turns around and sees Jesus standing there—but she doesn't recognize Him. The answer to her prayers is standing right in front of her, and she doesn't know it yet.
How many times have we been in Mary's shoes—looking for God and not realizing He's already there? Sometimes the answer is closer than we think.
John describes the most poignant moment of non-recognition.
Jesus is right there. Alive. Standing behind her. And Mary has no idea. She's looking for a dead body, and the living Lord is inches away.
Mary turns and sees Jesus standing there but fails to recognize Him, a detail that characterizes several post-resurrection appearances.
The failure to recognize the risen Jesus occurs in multiple post-resurrection accounts (Luke 24:16, 31). This may reflect the transformed nature of the resurrection body, Mary's tear-obscured vision, or the divine withholding of recognition until the appointed moment.
