The Empty Tomb

Through her tears, Mary sees two angels in white sitting where Jesus' body had been—one where His head was, one where His feet were. The tomb has become heaven's throne room.
The positioning of the angels mirrors the cherubim on the Ark of the Covenant. The empty space between them is the new mercy seat—atonement completed, death conquered.
John describes Mary's vision of the angels.
Mary peers through tears into the tomb and sees angels. They're sitting exactly where Jesus' body had been. It's as if heaven itself has taken up residence in the place of death.
Mary sees two angels in white seated at the head and foot of where Jesus' body had lain, positioned like the cherubim on the mercy seat.
The angels' positioning at head and foot evokes the cherubim flanking the mercy seat (kapporet) atop the Ark of the Covenant (Exodus 25:18-22). The empty slab between them becomes the new mercy seat where atonement has been accomplished.
The narrator describes Mary's angelic vision.

13“Woman, why are you weeping?” they asked.
14When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there. But she did not recognize that it was Jesus.
