While Jesus was in Jerusalem for the Passover festival, many people saw the miracles He was doing and believed in Him.
Lots of people believed because of the miracles, but Jesus knew that sign-based faith can be shallow. He was looking for something deeper.
John notes the popular excitement about Jesus' signs.
The crowds were impressed. But being impressed and being transformed are two different things. Jesus was looking for hearts, not just fans.
During the Passover feast in Jerusalem, many believed in Jesus' name after witnessing the signs He performed.
John distinguishes between 'believing in His name' based on signs and the deeper faith Jesus seeks. This sign-based faith is provisional and incomplete — a recurring concern in the Fourth Gospel.
