John 19:26, in plain English

From the cross, Jesus looks down at His mother and His closest friend and says to her: 'Here is your son.' Even dying, He takes care of the people He loves.

Why it's here

Jesus is in unimaginable pain, but He still sees His mother's need. He makes sure she'll be cared for. Love doesn't stop working, even on a cross.

In the middle of dying, Jesus looks at His mother. He sees her grief. And He does what He's always done: He takes care of the people He loves. He gives her a new son.

The scholarly reading

From the cross, Jesus sees His mother and the beloved disciple and entrusts her to the disciple's care, saying 'Woman, here is your son.'

Language and setting

The address 'Woman' (gynai) is respectful, not dismissive (cf. John 2:4). Jesus fulfills filial duty even from the cross. As the eldest son, He ensures His mother's care. The beloved disciple is traditionally identified as John.

Significance

Even in agony, Jesus attends to the practical needs of His mother. By entrusting her to the beloved disciple, He fulfills the fifth commandment and creates a new family relationship forged at the cross.

24So they said to one another, “Let us not tear it. Instead, let us cast lots to see who will get it.” This was to fulfill the Scripture: “They divided My garments among them, and cast lots for My clothing.”

25Near the cross of Jesus stood His mother and her sister, as well as Mary the wife of Clopas and Mary Magdalene.

26When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, here is your son.”

27Then He said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” So from that hour, this disciple took her into his home.

28After this, knowing that everything had now been accomplished, and to fulfill the Scripture, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”
