John 17:4, in plain English

Jesus tells the Father: 'I've brought you glory on earth by finishing everything you gave me to do.' What an incredible statement of faithfulness.

Jesus views His mission as essentially complete, even though the cross is still ahead. He has lived every moment in obedience to the Father's plan.

The scholarly reading

Jesus declares that He has glorified the Father on earth by completing the redemptive work assigned to Him, using the past tense proleptically for the cross.

Language and setting

The aorist tense 'edoxasa' (I glorified) and 'teleiosas' (I accomplished) speak of the work as already complete from Jesus' vantage point, anticipating the 'tetelestai' (it is finished) of John 19:30.

Jesus addresses the Father in prayer, reviewing His earthly ministry.

Significance

Jesus looks back over His entire ministry and declares it complete. Every task the Father gave Him has been accomplished—the cross is the final act of a finished mission.

4I have glorified You on earth by accomplishing the work You gave Me to do.
