John 17:12, in plain English

Jesus tells the Father: 'While I was with them, I kept them safe. Not one was lost, except the one who chose destruction—and that fulfilled Scripture.'

The scholarly reading

Jesus reports that He faithfully guarded the disciples during His earthly ministry, with the sole exception of Judas ('the son of destruction'), whose loss fulfilled Scripture.

Language and setting

The title 'son of destruction' (ho huios tes apoleias) appears also in 2 Thessalonians 2:3. The Scripture referenced likely includes Psalm 41:9 and Psalm 109:8. Jesus' protective role previews the Spirit's future guardianship.

Significance
