John 17:10, in plain English

Jesus says to the Father: 'Everything I have is yours, and everything you have is mine—and I've been glorified through these followers of mine.'

The scholarly reading

Jesus declares complete mutuality of possession with the Father and states that He has been glorified in and through the disciples.

Language and setting

The reciprocal possession ('All I have is Yours, and all You have is Mine') is one of the strongest Johannine affirmations of the unity of the Godhead. Being glorified 'in them' means the disciples' faith reflects Christ's glory.

Significance

Jesus makes a breathtaking claim of shared ownership with the Father—everything between them is held in common. And the disciples themselves have become a means of glorifying Christ.

9I ask on their behalf. I do not ask on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those You have given Me; for they are Yours.

10All I have is Yours, and all You have is Mine; and in them I have been glorified.

11I will no longer be in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to You.

12While I was with them, I protected and preserved them by Your name, the name You gave Me. Not one of them has been lost, except the son of destruction, so that the Scripture would be fulfilled.
