John 16:6, in plain English

Jesus knows their hearts are heavy with sorrow because of everything He has said. He doesn't dismiss their pain; He acknowledges it before offering hope.

Where it sits in the story

Jesus sees their faces. He knows their hearts are breaking. And He does not say 'stop being sad' or 'it's not that bad.' He says: I know you're hurting. Your sorrow is real. And then He is about to tell them why it won't last.

The scholarly reading

Jesus acknowledges that His words about departure and persecution have filled the disciples' hearts with sorrow (lypē). The sorrow is real and legitimate, but it is based on incomplete understanding.

Language and setting

The term lypē (grief, sorrow) appears six times in John 16:6-22, forming a major motif. Jesus validates their emotion while preparing to reframe it in light of the coming joy.

Significance

Jesus does not dismiss the disciples' grief. He names it openly: your hearts are full of sorrow because of what I've told you. But this acknowledgment is the prelude to a remarkable promise: their sorrow will be transformed into joy.

4But I have told you these things so that when their hour comes, you will remember that I told you about them. I did not tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.

5Now, however, I am going to Him who sent Me; yet none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’

6Instead, your hearts are filled with sorrow because I have told you these things.

7But I tell you the truth, it is for your benefit that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.

8And when He comes, He will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:
