After a long evening of puzzling over Jesus' words, the disciples feel a breakthrough. They think the fog has cleared—but the deepest lessons are still ahead.
The disciples express relief that Jesus is now speaking directly, believing they finally grasp His message without need for figurative language.
Their response to verse 25's promise of plain speech suggests they believe that moment has already arrived. John's narrative, however, hints at the irony that their understanding remains incomplete.
