John 15:24, in plain English

Where it sits in the story

Jesus performed miracles no one in history had ever seen. The blind received sight, the dead were raised, storms were silenced. And still some responded with hatred. The problem was never lack of proof; it was the condition of the human heart.

The scholarly reading

Jesus parallels His words (v. 22) with His works: the unique works (erga ha oudeis allos epoiēsen) He performed leave no excuse. Having seen these works, the world's hatred encompasses both Son and Father.

Language and setting

The uniqueness of Jesus' works (no one else has done them) removes the possibility of attributing them to merely human ability. The works are signs pointing to His divine identity.
