John 15:20, in plain English

Jesus reminds them: no servant is greater than the master. If they persecuted Me, they'll persecute you. If they followed My teaching, they'll follow yours too.

This is both a warning and an encouragement. Yes, you will face opposition. But you will also see fruit. Your ministry will mirror the Master's: some rejection, some reception.

Jesus sets realistic expectations: your life will look like Mine. Some people will reject you, and some will receive you. But either way, you are walking in the Master's footsteps, and there is no greater honor than that.

The scholarly reading

Jesus recalls His earlier teaching (John 13:16) that a servant is not greater than the master. If they persecuted Jesus, they will persecute His followers; if they obeyed His teaching, they will obey theirs.

Language and setting

The parallel between Jesus' treatment and the disciples' treatment is comprehensive: both persecution and reception will follow the same pattern. This prepares the disciples for a mixed response to their mission.

21But they will treat you like this because of My name, since they do not know the One who sent Me.

22If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. Now, however, they have no excuse for their sin.
