John 14:7, in plain English

Jesus says: if you really knew Me, you would know the Father too. And from now on, you do know Him, because you have seen Him in Me.

Why it's here

This is one of the most staggering claims Jesus makes. Every act of compassion, every moment of teaching, every miracle, all of it was the Father at work through the Son.

Jesus draws an unbreakable connection between knowing Him and knowing God.

Where it sits in the story

The disciples have been looking at God for three years and didn't fully realize it. Everything about Jesus, His kindness, His power, His grief, His joy, has been a window into the Father's heart. Now Jesus is pulling back the curtain.

The scholarly reading

Jesus asserts that knowing Him is equivalent to knowing the Father. The conditional 'if you had known Me' (ei egnōkeite me) gently rebukes their incomplete understanding while promising that from 'now on' (ap' arti) they will know the Father.

Language and setting

The shift from past incomplete knowledge to present and future knowledge marks a theological turning point. Through Jesus' glorification and the Spirit's coming, the disciples' understanding of the Father will be transformed.

Jesus links knowledge of Himself directly to knowledge of the Father.

Significance

Jesus reveals that the disciples' years with Him have been years with the Father, even if they didn't fully realize it. Everything they have seen Jesus do and say has been a revelation of the Father's nature. Going forward, this understanding will deepen dramatically.
