The Way, the Truth, the Life
“Lord,” said Thomas, “we do not know where You are going, so how can we know the way?” John 14:5 · Berean Standard Bible
Thomas says what everyone is thinking: 'Lord, we don't even know where You're going. How can we know the way?' His honesty opens the door for an incredible answer.
Thomas gets a bad reputation as a doubter, but here he is simply being honest. And his willingness to admit what he doesn't know leads to one of the greatest answers Jesus ever gives.
Thomas speaks up with transparent honesty.
Thomas is brave enough to say: I'm lost. I don't understand where You're going, and I definitely don't know the way. It is the most honest thing anyone could say in that moment. And because of his honesty, everyone in that room, and everyone who has read this since, receives one of Jesus' most beautiful answers.
Thomas voices the disciples' confusion with honest directness: since they do not know the destination, how can they know the way? His question serves as the catalyst for one of Jesus' most significant self-revelations.
Thomas is often remembered for his doubt (John 20:25), but here he demonstrates the courage to ask what everyone else is thinking. His question elicits Jesus' definitive 'I AM the Way' statement.
Thomas addresses Jesus with honest confusion, speaking for the group.

3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and welcome you into My presence, so that you also may be where I am.

6Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
7If you had known Me, you would know My Father as well. From now on you do know Him and have seen Him.”
