The scholarly reading

Peter boldly declares his willingness to die for Jesus (tēn psychēn mou hyper sou thēsō). The language of 'laying down one's life' ironically echoes Jesus' own mission (10:11, 15, 17-18) and foreshadows Peter's failure and eventual fulfillment.

Peter's declaration is sincere but premature. He uses the exact language Jesus used of Himself as the Good Shepherd. Peter will eventually fulfill this pledge, but first he must face his own failure.
