None of the other disciples understood why Jesus said this to Judas. The betrayal was happening right in front of them, and they missed it completely.
This is a sobering reminder that life-changing moments can unfold right before your eyes without you realizing it. The disciples were present but unaware.
John notes the other disciples' complete lack of understanding.
The most consequential exchange of the evening happens at the table, and no one catches it. They hear the words, see the bread, watch Judas leave, and have no idea that the betrayal of the ages was just set in motion.
The other disciples fail to understand the exchange between Jesus and Judas. Jesus' instruction to Judas remained cryptic to the group, preserving the privacy of the moment.
The disciples' ignorance serves John's narrative purpose: the betrayal unfolds in plain sight yet remains hidden. This ironic blindness mirrors the broader theme of unseeing witnesses in the Gospel.
John explains the disciples' lack of comprehension.
Despite the exchange happening right at the table, none of the other disciples understood what just occurred. They heard Jesus' words to Judas but could not decode their meaning. The betrayal was arranged in their presence yet invisible to them.
26Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I give this morsel after I have dipped it.” Then He dipped the morsel and gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot.
27And when Judas had taken the morsel, Satan entered into him.
28But no one at the table knew why Jesus had said this to him.
29Since Judas kept the money bag, some thought that Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the feast, or to give something to the poor.
30As soon as he had received the morsel, Judas went out into the night.
