Jesus answers quietly: 'It's the one I give this bread to after I dip it.' Then He dips the bread and hands it to Judas. A gesture of honor becomes a sign of betrayal.
Giving someone the dipped bread was a sign of special friendship from the host. Jesus extends one last act of kindness to Judas even in this moment, giving him every chance to turn back.

Jesus takes a piece of bread, dips it, and hands it directly to Judas. To everyone else, it looks like a gesture of friendship. To the beloved disciple, it is the answer. And for Judas, it is one final moment of grace before the darkness closes in.
Jesus identifies the betrayer through a private sign: dipping a morsel (psōmion) and giving it to Judas. Offering a dipped morsel was a gesture of honor and friendship, making the betrayal all the more bitter.
The morsel was likely a piece of bread dipped in the charoseth or bitter herbs of the Passover meal. The gesture of giving a dipped morsel to a guest was typically a sign of special honor from the host.
Jesus answers the beloved disciple's question with a symbolic action directed at Judas.
Jesus identifies Judas not with a public accusation but with a gesture of honor: dipping bread and offering it to him personally. The host's gesture of friendship becomes the marker of betrayal. Even in this moment, Jesus extends kindness to the one who will destroy Him.
24So Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus which one He was talking about.
25Leaning back against Jesus, he asked, “Lord, who is it?”
