Jesus knew His time had come to leave this world, and instead of pulling away, He loved His disciples more deeply than ever. He loved them to the very end.
This verse sets the tone for everything that follows in the upper room. Knowing that betrayal, suffering, and death are hours away, Jesus' response is not fear or anger but radical, self-giving love.
John introduces the final section of his Gospel with this powerful summary of Jesus' heart.
Imagine knowing your closest friends are about to fail you, that one will betray you, and that you are walking toward the worst kind of death. Jesus' response? He loves them more. This sets the stage for one of the most tender scenes in all of Scripture.
John sets the scene for the farewell narrative: Jesus knows His 'hour' (hōra) has arrived to depart (metabē) from this world to the Father. The phrase 'loved them to the end' (eis telos) means both 'to the uttermost' and 'to the last.'
This verse is the theological overture to the entire farewell discourse (chapters 13-17). The Passover setting frames Jesus as the true Paschal lamb, and 'His own' (tous idious) echoes John 1:11.
John provides this sweeping narrative introduction, setting the tone for everything that follows.
John opens the second half of his Gospel with a statement of breathtaking love. Knowing that His hour of departure has come, Jesus does not withdraw or harden Himself. Instead, He loves His disciples with a love that reaches to the uttermost, demonstrated in the foot washing that follows.
