John 12:24, in plain English

Jesus employs an agricultural metaphor: unless a grain of wheat (kokkos tou sitou) falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone. Death is the prerequisite for multiplication and fruitfulness.

Language and setting

The double 'amēn amēn' (truly, truly) formula marks this as a solemn, authoritative declaration. The metaphor explains the necessity of Jesus' death for the salvation of many, including the Gentiles who have just sought Him.
