The Hour Has Come
They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and requested of him, “Sir, we want to see Jesus.” John 12:21 · Berean Standard Bible
These Greek visitors went to Philip with a simple but profound request: they wanted to see Jesus. Sometimes the deepest spiritual journeys begin with that same desire.
Philip was from Bethsaida, a town with a strong Greek influence, which probably made him approachable to these foreigners. He and Andrew together bring the request to Jesus.
The Greek visitors speak to Philip, making their heartfelt request.
There is something beautifully simple about their words: 'Sir, we want to see Jesus.' No agenda, no demands, just a desire to encounter Him. Philip, perhaps nervous about protocol, loops in Andrew, and together they bring the request forward.
The Greeks approach Philip, whose Greek name and hometown of Bethsaida (a bilingual, Hellenized region) made him a natural intermediary. Their request 'we wish to see Jesus' (thelomen ton Iēsoun idein) carries theological weight in John.
Philip and Andrew, both bearing Greek names, serve as cultural bridges between the Gentile seekers and Jesus. 'To see' (idein) in John often implies deeper spiritual perception.

The Greeks wisely approached Philip, a disciple from the culturally mixed town of Bethsaida who would have been comfortable with Greek speakers. Philip, perhaps uncertain how Jesus would respond, turned to Andrew for support before approaching the Master.
19Then the Pharisees said to one another, “You can see that this is doing you no good. Look how the whole world has gone after Him!”
20Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the feast.
21They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and requested of him, “Sir, we want to see Jesus.”
22Philip relayed this appeal to Andrew, and both of them went and told Jesus.
23But Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.
