Why it's here

After Jesus rose from the dead, the disciples finally connected the dots between the Old Testament prophecies and what Jesus had done. Understanding came with time and the Holy Spirit's help.

John is reflecting back on this moment, writing years later with the clarity that hindsight and the Spirit brought.

Where it sits in the story

Imagine being in that crowd, cheering and waving palms, not fully grasping that you're watching ancient prophecy unfold in real time. The disciples lived this, and it wasn't until later that everything clicked into place.

The scholarly reading

John acknowledges that the disciples failed to grasp the scriptural significance of Jesus' entry until after His glorification (doxazō). Post-resurrection illumination is a recurring Johannine theme.

Language and setting

The term 'glorified' points to the crucifixion-resurrection-ascension complex in John's theology. The Spirit's role in bringing understanding (cf. John 14:26) is implied here.

Voice

The evangelist John narrates retrospectively, reflecting on the disciples' later comprehension.

Significance

At the time, the disciples were caught up in the excitement of the triumphal entry without understanding its deeper meaning. Only after Jesus' death and resurrection did the pieces fall into place, connecting Scripture to the events they had witnessed.

14Finding a young donkey, Jesus sat on it, as it is written:

15“Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion. See, your King is coming, seated on the colt of a donkey.”

16At first His disciples did not understand these things, but after Jesus was glorified they remembered what had been done to Him, and they realized that these very things had also been written about Him.

17Meanwhile, many people who had been with Jesus when He called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to testify.

18That is also why the crowd went out to meet Him, because they heard that He had performed this sign.
