The crowd takes palm branches (ta baia tōn phoinikōn) and goes out to meet Jesus, shouting 'Hōsanna' (Psalm 118:25-26) and acclaiming Him as 'the King of Israel'—a spontaneous royal procession.

Language and setting

Palm branches were national symbols (cf. 1 Maccabees 13:51, 2 Maccabees 10:7) associated with military victory and national liberation. 'Hosanna' (Hebrew 'hôshî'â-nnā,' save us now) combined with 'King of Israel' gives the entry explicitly messianic and royal significance.
