John 10:4

The Good Shepherd

When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. John 10:4 · Berean Standard Bible
What It Means

John 10:4, in plain English

When he has brought them all out, he goes ahead of them. The sheep follow because they know his voice.

Why it's here

A good shepherd doesn't push from behind—he leads from the front, facing any danger first. The sheep follow because they trust him.

Who's speaking

Jesus explains how the shepherd leads and why the sheep willingly follow.

Where it sits in the story

This is a picture of leadership through trust, not force. The sheep aren't driven; they're drawn by a voice they know and love.

A Closer Look

The scholarly reading

The shepherd leads from the front ('emprosthen autōn poreuetai'), and the sheep follow because they 'oidasin' (know experientially) his voice—describing a relationship built on familiarity and trust.

Language and setting

Palestinian shepherds led from the front rather than driving from behind, a distinctive cultural practice. 'Oidasin' implies deep, experiential knowledge rather than mere recognition.

Voice

Jesus describes the shepherd's method of leading and the sheep's basis for following.

Significance

Jesus presents leadership as going ahead into danger and uncertainty while the flock follows in trust—a model that will find its ultimate expression in Jesus' own death.

In context

John 10:2–6

2But the one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.

3The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen for his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

4When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.

5But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will flee from him because they do not recognize his voice.”

6Jesus spoke to them using this illustration, but they did not understand what He was telling them.

Read all of John 10 — Jesus describes a shepherd who knows every sheep by name and lays down his life for them. The hired hand runs; the good shepherd stays.
