The scholarly reading

Jesus urges belief in the works themselves (tois ergois pisteuete) if they cannot believe Him directly, so they may come to know the mutual indwelling of Father and Son ('the Father is in Me, and I in the Father').

Language and setting

The concept of mutual indwelling (perichoresis in later theology) is central to Johannine christology. Jesus offers the works as a bridge from observable evidence to theological truth.

Jesus makes a final appeal, offering His works as a pathway to understanding His unity with the Father.
