The explanation for the hired hand's flight is his fundamental lack of concern (ou melei autō) for the sheep—his motivation is wages, not relationship.

Language and setting

The phrase 'ou melei autō peri tōn probatōn' echoes the language of Judas in 12:6 where the same verb (melei) describes his lack of concern for the poor. The parallel is likely intentional.
