The scholarly reading

Jesus makes His second major 'egō eimi' declaration: 'I am the good shepherd' (ho poimēn ho kalos), with 'kalos' meaning noble, beautiful, or ideal—the model shepherd who lays down His life (psychē) for the sheep.

Language and setting

The 'good shepherd' title draws on Ezekiel 34's prophecy where God Himself would shepherd Israel after its leaders failed. 'Tithēsin tēn psychēn' (lays down His life) anticipates the cross.

Significance
