Not a partial light, not a dim reflection — the real, genuine Light was on His way. And His light reaches everyone, no exceptions.
John declares that the authentic Light was about to enter human history.
Every light you've ever seen in this world is just a flicker compared to the true Light. And He was on His way — for everyone.
The true Light (Greek: to phōs to alēthinon, 'the genuine, authentic Light'), which illuminates every person, was in the process of coming into the world.
The adjective alēthinon ('true, genuine') distinguishes Christ from all other lights — prophetic, philosophical, or religious. The universal scope ('every man') anticipates the Gospel's message for all nations.
The evangelist identifies the true Light as one who enlightens all humanity and is entering the world.
This verse transitions from the eternal realm to the incarnation. The Light that has always existed is now arriving — stepping into human history to illuminate every person.
