When John saw Jesus walking by, he said, 'Look — the Lamb of God!'
John pointed his own followers away from himself and toward Jesus. That's the mark of a true spiritual leader.
John the Baptist directs his disciples' attention to Jesus.
He could have kept his followers. Instead, he pointed them to someone better. The greatest gift a mentor can give is pointing you to Jesus.
Seeing Jesus walk by, John the Baptist again declares, 'Behold, the Lamb of God!' (Greek: ide ho amnos tou theou), directing his own disciples' attention to Jesus.
This abbreviated form of the earlier declaration (v.29) is now directed specifically at his own disciples, effectively encouraging them to leave him and follow Jesus.

The Baptist's greatest act of discipleship is releasing his own followers to Jesus. He intentionally directs them away from himself, fulfilling his role as the one who must decrease.
34I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”
35The next day John was there again with two of his disciples.
36When he saw Jesus walking by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”
37And when the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.
38Jesus turned and saw them following. “What do you want?” He asked.
