John answered, 'I just baptize with water. But right here among you is someone you don't even recognize.'
The Messiah was already there, standing in the crowd, and they were too busy interrogating John to notice. Sometimes you can miss God when you're focused on the wrong thing.
John shifts the focus completely away from himself and toward the unknown one in their midst.
While they were busy questioning John, the answer to all their questions was standing right there in the crowd. God was already at work — they just couldn't see it yet.
John redirects attention from himself, stating he baptizes only with water, but among them stands one they do not know.
The contrast between water baptism and the implied Spirit baptism by the unknown one echoes the Synoptic tradition (Mark 1:8). John's water baptism is preparatory; the real baptizer is already present but unrecognized.
John the Baptist contrasts his water baptism with the unrecognized one standing among them.
John deflects the question about his authority by pointing to the greater reality: someone infinitely more significant is already in their midst, and they have no idea.
24Then the Pharisees who had been sent
25asked him, “Why then do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
26“I baptize with water,” John replied, “but among you stands One you do not know.
27He is the One who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”
28All this happened at Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
