The Hebrew חָכְמָה (chochmah, 'wisdom') and בִינָה (binah, 'understanding') are not synonyms but complementary—wisdom involves practical discernment; understanding involves penetrative comprehension. By asking who bestowed these capacities, God pivots from external cosmology to internal human faculties, suggesting that Job's capacity to interrogate creation itself requires a gift from the very God he questions. Proverbs 2:6 offers the theological answer: 'The LORD gives wisdom.'
