Where does light come from? Where does darkness live? Do you know the pathways and homes of these fundamental forces?
This shifts to asking about the most fundamental realities—light and dark, visibility and hiddenness. Not their locations, exactly, but their nature. Job is being asked about the foundational dimensions of reality itself.
God speaking to Job
In Scripture, light and darkness represent more than physical phenomena. They represent knowledge versus ignorance, God's presence versus absence, good versus evil. Job, who feels abandoned in darkness, is being asked if he understands even these most basic realities.
God asks whether Job knows the way to light's dwelling place and where darkness resides, treating these cosmic phenomena as though they possessed habitations.
The phrase דֶרֶךְ לִשְׁכַּן־אוֹר (derek lishkan-or, the way to the home of light) and שְׁכַן־חֹשֶׁךְ (shkan-choshekh, the home of darkness) personify light and darkness as divine beings with literal dwelling places. This poetic language reflects ancient Near Eastern cosmology, where celestial phenomena were understood as divine agents. The Septuagint translated this as referring to the 'house of light' and 'house of darkness,' suggesting these as cosmic regions. Philo and the Church Fathers, particularly John Chrysostom, interpreted this metaphorically: Job does not know the source or principle of illumination or obscuration. The passage suggests that even the most fundamental cosmic principles operate according to laws Job has never discovered.

The theological significance lies in treating light and darkness not as mere physical phenomena but as cosmic realities with their own existence and agency.
