Language and setting

The verb הָרַס (haras, 'tears down') combined with מִסָּבִיב (misaviv, 'on every side') creates an image of complete encirclement and demolition. The phrase הִשְׁמִידַנִי (hishmidani, 'I am gone' or 'I am destroyed') uses the verb שׁמד (shmd) meaning to obliterate utterly—the kind of destruction applied to Sodom (Deuteronomy 29:23). His hope is uprooted like a tree, suggesting not a gradual withering but violent extraction. The 17th-century Lutheran commentator Balthasar Meisner saw in this an anticipation of the grave, making verse 10 a portal into the vision of verses 23-27.
