Authentic wisdom from above is fundamentally pure, peace-loving, gentle, reasonable, merciful, producing good fruit, impartial, and sincere. This sevenfold characterization defines true spiritual wisdom by its attributes.

Language and setting

The phrase 'from above' (anothen) echoes Jesus's language in John 3:3, 7—wisdom originating in the divine realm rather than human or demonic sources. The seven qualities form a constellation: hagnē (pure/chaste), eirēnikē (peace-loving), epieikēs (gentle/reasonable), eupeithēs (accommodating/open to persuasion), mestē eleōs (full of mercy), and akatakritos (impartial/not judging). This is not abstract virtue but practical, relational wisdom.

Significance

This anticipates Paul's fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22–23 and reflects the cumulative wisdom tradition from Proverbs through Philo of Alexandria's characterization of divine wisdom. It also echoes Wisdom of Solomon's description of Sophia (Lady Wisdom) in the intertestamental period.
