Paul is countering false teachers (likely proto-Gnostic figures like Hymenaeus and Philetus, mentioned in verse 17) who either denied the resurrection or spiritualized it into an already-accomplished event. By insisting on the resurrection 'ek nekrōn' (from among the dead) as historically real and eschatologically pivotal, Paul grounds Christian faith in actual redemptive history.
