Why it's here

Timothy is young, probably discouraged, and facing real opposition as he tries to lead a church in Ephesus. Paul is writing from prison, knowing his own death may be near, so he's calling Timothy to look beyond his own weakness to something stronger.

This echoes the whole trajectory of Scripture—God choosing the weak to confound the strong. From Moses saying he can't speak, to Gideon's tiny army, to the disciples being called 'unschooled and ordinary men,' God's pattern is always that His grace is what actually does the work.

The scholarly reading

Paul exhorts Timothy to draw strength from the grace available to all believers through Christ's redemptive work, not from his own resources or Paul's apostolic authority alone.

Language and setting

Timothy, likely in his thirties and already serving as a leader in Ephesus, faces mounting pressure from false teachers and an increasingly hostile environment. Paul, imprisoned and aware of his impending execution, writes to fortify his younger colleague spiritually. The imperative mood here—be strong—carries the sense of a recursive action: Timothy must continually refresh himself in grace rather than presume upon past experiences.

Significance

This echoes the entire Pauline corpus: the sufficiency of Christ's grace in 2 Corinthians 12:9 ('My grace is sufficient for you'), and prefigures the theme of perseverance that runs through Hebrews and Revelation.
