The Greek 'skeuos' (vessel/body) carries deliberate ambiguity—some manuscripts and early interpreters read this as 'wife' (metonymically, as a man's 'vessel'), while others interpret it literally as bodily self-control. The manuscript tradition and contextual emphasis on individual responsibility suggests the latter reading is primary. The cultural setting—where male sexual dominance was assumed—made this teaching radical.
