Everyone born of God possesses the capacity to overcome the world's antithetical value system, and this victory is fundamentally an act of faith that transcends worldly opposition.

The Johannine term κόσμος (kosmos) denotes not the physical creation but the ideological order hostile to God—the systems of power, materialism, and idolatry that oppose Christian witness. The community faced social ostracism, economic pressure, and perhaps physical persecution from pagan society and apostate Jews; this verse provides theodicy and encouragement.

This echoes Jesus's promise in John 16:33 ('In the world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world') and extends it as an inheritance available to all believers through their union with Christ.

2By this we know that we love the children of God: when we love God and keep His commandments.

3For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome,
