You can actually tell whether you love God's children by looking at your life: do you love God himself, and are you actually trying to follow what He asks of you?

Why it's here

Some people claimed to love God while showing indifference or even hostility toward fellow believers. John is calling out this contradiction—you can't claim vertical love (toward God) while neglecting horizontal love (toward His people). Love that matters shows itself in obedience.

This continues the thread from 1 John 4 about loving one another. John keeps circling back to this because it was a real problem: pride, judgment, and coldness were creeping into communities. The proof of loving God is how you treat those in His family.

The scholarly reading

The authentic test of loving God's children is demonstrated through loving God himself and obedience to his moral commands—not sentimental affection, but covenantal commitment.

Language and setting

The Johannine community faced the tension between antinomian libertines (who claimed spiritual freedom absolved them of ethical responsibility) and legalistic rigorists. John establishes that love for believers cannot be separated from obedience and reverence toward God; they form an inseparable triad.

Significance

This continues the Johannine theme from the Gospel (13:34-35) where Jesus makes love the distinguishing characteristic of discipleship, now clarified as inseparable from theonomic obedience.
