From the Garden of Eden forward, the core sin has been disbelieving God's word. Here, that pattern continues: false teachers are essentially saying God didn't know what He was talking about when He testified to Jesus's identity. John won't let his readers minimize that rebellion.

The scholarly reading

The person who believes in the Son carries God's testimony within their person—a subjective, inward certainty—while those who reject this testimony effectively accuse God of dishonesty and construct a false god.

The phrase 'made him out to be a liar' (ψευδομαι/pseudomai) is stark: to deny the testimony God gave about his Son is to impugn God's truthfulness itself. John operates within a worldview where there is no neutral ground—belief and disbelief have cosmic moral significance.
